THE CINEMA TROPICAL SERIES
In the past few years, several Latin American countries have seen
their filmmaking industries show signs of recovery and growth, as new
grounds in both the commercial and independent fronts are being broken.
This series will bring a selection of films from both tendencies, giving
US viewers a glimpse into the exciting revitalized cinema from Latin America.
The Cinema Tropical Series will showcase recent Latino/Latin American
in co-presentation with venues from New York City

Calle 54
(Fernando Trueba (Spain, 2000, 105min.)
A musical documentary for music lovers, Calle
54 is a musical about music," says Academy Award winning
director Fernando Trueba, a passionate fan of Latin Jazz for over
20 years. Featuring a dozen musical numbers and terrific appearances
by performers such as Paquito D'Rivera, Eliane Elias, Tito Puente,
Gato Barbieri, Chucho Valdes, and Chico O'Farrill, the film is an
electrifying celebration of Latin Jazz and the people who perform,
compose and, most of all, live it. From samba, to pambiche to flamenco,
Calle 54 features performances of material
that has never been recorded. A musical journey that captures the
heart and soul of an entire culture and what it inspires in people
around the world.

Domésticas, O Filme /
Maids
(Fernando Meirelles and Nando Olival
Brazil, 2001, 35mm, 90 min.)
In Brazil, there are no less than three million housemaids,
each with her own, yet universal story of loneliness, ambitions
and loss but also of mutual solidarity and love. Based on one of
the most popular and widely praised modern Brazilian stage plays,
this defiant and original film, follows the stories of five maids
who are brought together by the drudgery of their work and the bus
they ride. Set to the rhythm of a samba, the film draws an intimate
portrait of these characters and their problems. Fast, sexy, and
life affirming, Maids offers both superb slice-of-life acting and
sophisticated film work. www.domesticasofilme.com.br
