The
Cinema Tropical Summer Series
In the past few years, several Latin American countries
have seen their filmmaking industries show signs of recovery and
growth, as new grounds in both the commercial and independent
fronts are being broken. This series will bring a selection of
films from both tendencies, giving US viewers a glimpse into the
exciting revitalized cinema from Latin America. The Cinema Tropical
Series will showcase recent Latino/Latin American in co-presentation
with venues from New York City and New Jersey.

Separações / Breaking Up
A film by Domingos De Oliveira (Brazil,
2002, 116 min. In Portuguese with English subtitles)
A delicious romantic comedy about the four stages of a break-up:
denial, negotiation, revolt, and acceptance- set among talkative,
self-involved cariocas. The much older, Cabral is married to Glorinha.
They decide to take a break from each other, but the separation
becomes real when Glorinha falls in love with Diogo. Cabral realizes
his mistake and will do anything to win her back. Most everybody
gets involved in the process, following the not-always-accurate
maxim, "better regret what you've done than what you haven't
done."

A film by Rodrigo Grande (Argentina, 2001,
90 min. In Spanish with English subtitles)
After botching up a robbery, Alberto and Castor are thrown in
the prison of Rosario. During their thirty-years sentence, Alberto
stops singing tango and Castor has not played the magical tango
instrument "bandoneón." Living without booze,
friends, or women, their only consolation is to think about the
money they hid in the Paraná River. Under menacing skies,
they are released to a city they no longer recognize, forcing
them to go back to their old ways. Will revenge get in the way
of friendship and land them back in jail?
