Cinema Tropical in collaboration with NYU’s King Juan Carlos I Center presents

"LA SIERRA: A Representation of the Colombian Conflict"
a special panel discussion

Wednesday, November 9, 8:30pm
King Juan Carlos I Center at NYU
53 Washington Square South
(212) 998-3650

Colombia is home to an internal conflict, one of the world’s oldest and bloodiest civil wars. Daily violence between leftist guerilla groups and rightist paramilitary troops has left tens of thousands dead each year. The situation has become even more complex now that the Colombian army is intervening, with the support of the US government. Though covered now and again in the news, a new documentary, LA SIERRA brings groundbreaking first-hand images to the screen and unheard of access to the conflict at street level. We would like to take the opportunity of the film’s release to incite a conversation about the way Colombia has been represented in the US media. Please join us for this singular event.

The panel will revolve around the representation of the Colombian conflict in the US media. It will be preceded by a short video presentation with clips from the documentary. Moderated by Margarita de la Vega, executive director – Flaherty Film Seminar, the panel will feature Scott Dalton, director of La Sierra, Maria McFarland, journalist for Human Rights Watch, and Mario Murillo from WBAI’s Wakeup Call.

La Sierra opens November 10th at the Two Boots Pioneer Theater.
A First Run / Icarus Films release.
