Ana y los otros
(Ana and the Others)
Argentina, 2003, 80 min. Directed by Celina Murga
Ana and the Others is an intimate portrait of a young woman who returns
to her small, provincial hometown for the first time in years since moving
away to the big city of Buenos Aires.
Newcomer Camila Toker brilliantly plays Ana, a 25-year-old who goes back
home to the river town of Paraná for Christmas after many years
and reunites with old friends most of whom have, for better and worse,
settled into small-town married life. Looking for memories, finding places
and people from the past, and slowly becoming more and more curious about
the whereabouts of an elusive ex-boyfriend, Ana considers the world she
left behind, the life she chose not to make her own.
“A lovely debut … Ana feels like a Comedies and Proverbs
entry that Rohmer never got around to making.” — Kent Jones,
Film Comment
“The young director proves she already knows how to film the
heat that softens the body, the injustice of sentimental relationships
or the games kids play, and how to turn digressions into bliss. Besides,
the film reveals Camila Toker, a young and talented actress in the role
of Ana.” — Edouard Waintrop, Libération
“(Celina) Murga's gift for clear storytelling set against an
unusual provincial background should be the wave that washes it to foreign
fest shores.” — Deborah Young, Variety
“Beautifully shot and played naturally by the cast, the film
has a wry observational style and warm humour that make it deeply engaging.”
— Rich Cline, Shadows on the Wall
“Very Good. With the lightness, strictness, and stripping that
refer to Eric Rohmer and the cinema of A. Kiarostami, and with an attractive
protagonist …Murga builds up a delicate, charming, contemplative
and non-conventional situation comedy.” — La Nación
