The Argentine-Brazilian co-production film Sueño Florianópolis by Ana Katz was the winner of three awards at the 53rd edition of the Karlovy Vary Film Festival including the Special Jury Prize (with a cash prize of $15,000 USD), the Best Actress and the Film Critics' Awards.
Starring Mercedes Morán and Gustavo Garzón, the film follows Lucrecia, Pedro, and their teenage kids Julian and Florencia who set out from Buenos Aires one sweltering day in a rattletrap Renault to vacation in the Brazilian summer resort of Florianópolis. As presented, however, this picture of family contentment is a fiction: the parents are separated and have now lived apart for several months. In the gently lilting atmosphere of a vacation a thousand miles north of home, the protagonists experience fundamental moments of discovery as profound emotions awaken within them in different forms.
The 53rd edition of the Karlovy Vary Film Festival took place June 29 - July 9 in the Czech Republic.
