The epic 14-hour-plus Argentine film La Flor by Mariano Llinás was announced as the winner of the top award for Best Latin American Film of the Year at the 10th Annual Cinema Tropical Awards, which were announced this evening at a special event at The New York Times Company headquarters.
The Brazilian filmmaker André Novais Oliveira was the winner of the Cinema Tropical Award for Best Director for Long Way Home /Temporada, while Lila Avilés’ The Chambermaid / La camarista from Mexico was the winner of the award for Best First Film. The jury gave the Colombian film Lapü by Juan Pablo Polanco and César Alejandro Jaimes the Award for Best Latin American Documentary, and the Cinema Tropical Award for Best U.S. Latinx Film was presented to The Infiltrators by Cristina Ibarra and Alex Rivera.
The Latin American winners of this year’s Cinema Tropical Awards were selected by a jury panel composed by Jens Andermann, Professor of Spanish and Portuguese at New York University and an editor of the Journal of Latin American Cultural Studies; Rodrigo Brandão, Director of Communications at The Intercept; Sophie Cavoulacos, Assistant Curator at The Museum of Modern Art’s Department of Film, Ivone Margulies, Film professor at Hunter College, and the Graduate Center at City University of New York, (CUNY); and Tyler Wilson, Assistant Programmer at Film at Lincoln Center. The U.S. Latinx Award was selected by artist and curator Kathy Brew; Natalie Erazo, Coordinator of Repertory and Specialty Film Programs at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM); and filmmaker and New York Latino Film Festival programmer Miguel Solimán.
