Cannes 2022: Mexican Producer Julio Chavezmontes Is Vying for the Palme d'Or for a Fifth Time

Mexican producer Julio Chavezmontes returns to the official competition of the Cannes Film Festival for a fifth time looking to win his first Palme d’Or. Chavezmontes, with his production company Piano, is one of the co-producers of Triangle of Sadness, the latest film by Swedish director Ruben Östlund, who had won the Palme d’Or in 2017 for his satirical film The Square.

Chavezmontes made his debut in Cannes’ official competition in 2018, as one of the producers of the French film Knife+Heart /Un Couteau Dans Le Cœur by Yann Gonzalez. Last year, the Mexican producer was behind three selections that were in the official competition at the Cannes Film Festival: the French film Annette by Leos Carax, winner of the Best Director Award; the Colombian film Memoria by Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul, winner of the Jury Prize; and Bergman Island by French director Mia Hansen-Løve.

Founded in 2011 by Chavezmontes, production company Piano has built a solid international filmography, receiving more than 50 international awards and nominations. In addition of the Cannes Film Festival, Piano productions have also participated in the official competitions at the Venice, Berlin, and Sundance film festivals. Chavezmontes has produced films by renowned directors such as Abel Ferrarda, Carlos Reygadas, Sebastián Hofmann, Emiliano Rocha Minter, Tin Dirdamal, and Eugenio Polgovsky.

"It is always an honor to be there, it is one of the great platforms for cinema to reach its audience and to make itself known, it is a privilege to be there," said Chavezmontes on his participation at this year’s Cannes Film Festival quoted in Mexican newspaper El Universal.
