Panama Selects SALSIPUEDES for the Oscars

Panama has submitted Ricardo Aguilar Navarro and Manuel Rodríguez’s Salsipuedes for the 89th Academy Awards Foreign-Language category. The film tells the story of Andrés who moved to Washington State aged 10 but returns to his local neighborhood in Panama City, when aged 20, upon hearing about the death of his grandfather.

The film premiered at the Panama International Film Festival and received glowing reviews, The Hollywood Reporter called it, “a diamond in the rough.” Panama made history in 2014 when it submitted its first film Invasion (Invasión) by Abner Benaim. Invasion won Best Documentary at last year’s Cinema Tropical Awards. In 2015 Panama submitted Box 25 / Caja 25, but the film did not make the final list of submissions.
