A man in chains in the jungle, a young man who dreams of being part of something, and a militant from an armed group who must exercise cruelty despite not believing in it – they are all in caught up in the violence that they do not understand. Jorge Forero’s stunning directorial debut, which premiered at the Berlinale’s Forum section, is a timely film that that explores the complexities of a country in war for over 50 years. Assembled as a triptych, the characters in Violencia each voluntary or involuntary part of a mechanism that overcomes them, reveal their greatness or misery in the minimum tasks that they deal to survive. From that –sometimes morbid– poetry of the everyday and the irrefutable truth of the details, we are shown a country with a sick and injured society. However, it is a country where people wish to find happiness nonetheless, by trying to live, dream, and love.

About the director:
Jorge Forero is a Colombian film director and producer who has studied in Colombia, Cuba and Brazil. He has worked in both film and television as well as given workshops, classes and seminars in different national and international events. In 2015, Forero made his directorial debut at the Berlin International Film Festival with Violencia. The film has since screened at multiple festivals around the world and was the winner of the Best Film Award at the Huelva Film Festival, among other recognitions. He is currently a professor at the Pontifical Xavierian University of Bogota, and at the Conservatory of Executive Production at the National Film School.
