The award-winning magical realist documentary 306 Hollywood, the debut feature by the directorial duo of Venezuelan-American siblings Elan and Jonathan Bogarín, has earned a couple of nominations, for Outstanding Cinematography and Outstanding Music Composition in the 41st Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards.
Winner of a Special Mention for Best U.S. Latinx Film 2018 at the 2018 Cinema Tropical Awards, 306 Hollywood is the street address in Newark, New Jersey, of former dress designer Annette Ontell, who lived for 71 years in a nondescript white house. After her death in 2011, her grandchildren Elan and Jonathan were left with her belongings, from toothbrushes to tax documents. Instead of throwing away this lifetime of detritus, The Venezuelan-American filmmakers began a meticulous process of cataloguing and archiving everything Annette left behind. The result is this magical documentary, an inspiring look at the extraordinary stories and histories hidden away in the everyday.
The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival and had its U.S. broadcast premiere on PBS’ POV series. The Bogaríns along with New York-based Mexican DP Alejandro Mejía did the cinematography of the film, while Troy Herion was the music composer. The winners of the Emmy documentary categories will be announced in an online ceremony on Tuesday, September 22.
