Sebastián Lelio gave Chile its first Oscar win in the Foreign-language film category for his film A Fantastic Woman, also marking the second Latin American film to ever win in the category after Argentina for The Official Story (Luis Puenzo, 1986) and The Secret in Their Eyes (Juan José Campanella, 2010).
Director Lelio accepted the Academy Award with actors Daniela Vega, Francisco Reyes and producer Pablo Larraín. The film is the story of Marina, a transwoman who is a waitress and singer, and Orlando, an older man, who are in love and planning for the future. After Orlando suddenly falls ill and dies, Marina is forced to confront his family and society, and to fight again to show them who she is: complex, strong, forthright, fantastic.
The 90th Academy Awards are being held this evening in Hollywood, California.
