Mexican directors Alfonso Cuarón, Issa López, and Hiromi Kamata have been nominated for the 77th annual DGA Awards. Cuarón earned a nomination in the Movies for Television and Limited Series category for his Apple TV+ production Disclaimer. López and Kamata were nominated in the Dramatic Series category for HBO’s True Detective: Night Country (“Part 6”) and FX’s Shōgun (“Ladies of the Willow World”), respectively.
Starring Cate Blanchett, Kevin Kline, and Sacha Baron Cohen, Disclaimer is a psychological thriller miniseries about Catherine Ravenscroft, a television documentary journalist whose career is built on exposing the transgressions of long-respected institutions.
“Part 6,” the season finale of HBO’s True Detective: Night Country, follows Detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro as they investigate the disappearance of eight men from the Tsalal Arctic Research Station in Alaska. Trapped on Tsalal during a snowstorm, the detectives uncover the truth about the missing scientists and Anne, despite their strained relationship from a past unresolved case.
Set in 1600 Japan, Shōgun explores the story of Lord Yoshii Toranaga, who fights for survival as his enemies unite against him. The episode “Ladies of the Willow World,” directed by Kamata, introduces a mysterious European ship marooned in a nearby fishing village. Kamata, born in Mexico City to a Japanese father and Mexican mother, brings a unique perspective to the series.
Cuarón has previously won the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film twice: in 2014 for Gravity and in 2019 for Roma. This marks the first DGA nominations for López and Kamata.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony on February 8 at The Beverly Hilton.
