The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced this morning, the nominees for the 95th annual Academy Awards, which includes a handful of Latin American nominees from Argentina, Cuba, and Mexico.
Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, directed by the Mexican director with Mark Gustafson, was nominated for Best Animated Feature. The film recently won the Golden Globe in the same category, and is the favorite to win in the animated feature competition.
Argentina, 1985 by Santiago Mitre, the surprise winner of the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Non-English, was nominated for Best International Film. This marks the eighth nomination for the South American country, which is the only Latin American country to have won the Oscar twice, in 1985 for The Official Story by Luis Puenzo, and in 2009 for The Secret in Their Eyes by Juan José Campanella.
The Mexican film Bardo, False Chronicle of Handful of Truths, by Alejandro González Iñárritu, failed to earn a nomination in the international category, but it earned an Oscar nomination for Best Cinematography by Iranian-French photographer Darius Khondji.
Cuban performer Ana de Armas received her first Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her role as Marilyn Monroe in the biopic movie Blonde, and Mexican Academy Award winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón received an Oscar nomination for his role as producer in the live-action film La Pupille, directed by Alice Rohrwacher.
The biggest Latin American snub was for Chilean director of photography Claudio Miranda, who was the leading favorite to win the Oscar for his work in Top Gun: Maverick, but he wasn’t nominated.
The winners of the 95th Academy Awards will be announced at a ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 12.
