Cinema Tropical and the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Arizona are thrilled to announce the launch of Cinema Tucsón, a new cultural initiative featuring monthly screenings of Mexican films at the historic Fox Tucson Theatre, programmed by Carlos A. Gutiérrez and Vicky Westover.
As Mexican cinema continues to generate world-wide enthusiasm, the creative team behind the Tucson Cine Mexico film festival—which, over the past seventeen years, created a vital platform for the exhibition of Mexican cinema in the U.S—is bringing monthly screenings of a mix of classic films, B movies, and new cinema with exceptional filmmakers and special guests for dialogue with the Tucson community.
The series is scheduled to start on Sunday, September 19 with the Arizona premiere of Polvo (Powder), the directorial debut by acclaimed actor José María Yazpik (Narcos, I’m So Excited). An engrossing and finely written comedy with a knockout cast, Polvo was nominated for ten Ariel Awards presented by the Mexican Academy of Film Arts and Sciences. This inaugural screening will be followed by a free after party at the Borderlands Brewery.
In October, Cinema Tucsón will present a new digital restoration of the 1968 camp film The Batwoman by René Cardona, Mexico’s own take on the Batmania of the sixties fueled by the popular television show starring Adam West. Adding lucha libre to the mix, the Mexican Batwoman (played by the wonderful Maura Monti) is called to investigate an evil and whacked-out scientist who is capturing wrestlers and using their spinal fluid to create a Gill Man.
“We are thrilled to partner with the Fox Tucson Theatre in presenting Cinema Tucsón to the local community. After the pandemic, we made the decision to offer a different format—monthly screenings—as a way to bring more Mexican cinema to Tucson, so not only once a year,” says Vicky Westover, co-programmer of Cinema Tucsón.
Cinema Tucsón is presented by Cinema Tropical and the UA Center for Latin American Studies, in partnership with the Consulate General of Mexico in Tucson Additional support by Film Tucson, Visit Tucson, Borderlands Brewery, Godat Design and La Estrella Bakery.
