Akelarre, the fifth film by Paris-based Argentine director Pablo Agüero (Eva Doesn’t Sleep), will compete for the Golden Shell as an entry in the official selection at the 68th edition of the San Sebastian, the Spanish film festival announced yesterday.
Shot in the Basque Country, French Basque Country and Navarre, the historical thriller is based on an actual witchcraft trial that took place in northern Spain in 1609. Akelarre stars Álex Brendemühl, Amaia Aberasturi, Garazi Urkola, Irati Saez de Urabain, Jone Laspiur, and Lorea Ibarra. The screenplay, loosely based on the book On the Inconstancy of Witches: Tableau de l'inconstance des mauvais anges et demons by Pierre de Lancre, was written by the director himself together with Katell Guillou, and the film is a co-production between Spain, France, and Argentina.
Additionally, the festival announced that the Chilean documentary film The Mole Agent / El agente topo by Maite Alberdi will participate in the Perlak section at San Sebastian, taking place September 18-26.
