Argentine Filmmaker Lucas Vignale, Co-Director of THE RIVER TRAIN, Dies in Helicopter Accident

Argentine filmmaker Lucas A. Vignale, the co-director and co-writer of the acclaimed debut feature The River Train / El tren fluvial, died in a helicopter accident in Rio de Janeiro on June 14. He was 29. According to multiple news reports, Vignale was among the victims of a midair helicopter collision over the Brazilian city that claimed six lives in total, including those of American singer and comedian Oliver Tree and four other passengers.

A rising voice in Argentine cinema, Vignale had recently made an impressive international breakthrough with The River Train, which he co-directed alongside actor-turned-filmmaker Lorenzo Ferro. The film premiered in the Perspectives competition at the 2026 Berlin International Film Festival before screening at New Directors/New Films in New York this April. Critics praised its lyrical blend of coming-of-age storytelling, magical realism, and evocative rural landscapes, heralding Vignale and Ferro as significant new talents in contemporary Argentine cinema.

Set between the Argentine countryside and Buenos Aires, The River Train follows a nine-year-old Malambo prodigy who runs away from home in search of freedom and self-discovery. The film quickly emerged as one of the most celebrated Latin American debuts of the year, earning acclaim for its visual imagination and emotional sensitivity.

Born in Buenos Aires in 1997, Vignale began his career as an editor before moving into directing, establishing himself in Argentina's music industry through collaborations with some of the country's most prominent artists, including Bizarrap, Duki, Nicki Nicole, Milo J, Trueno, Wos, and Nathy Peluso, as well as Colombian superstar J Balvin. In 2024, he directed Tripolar 360, a documentary about the Mendoza-based rock band Usted Señalemelo.

Before making his feature debut, Vignale also collaborated with filmmaker and content creator Gaspar Prim Díaz on a short film and a medium-length film for Gaspi's YouTube channel, works that collectively amassed more than 17 million views. Together with Ferro, he co-wrote and co-directed the short film La Pasión, which received an award at the 25th edition of Buenos Aires Independent Film Festival, BAFICI in 2024.
