Los Angeles-based non-profit media arts organization Film Independent has unveiled this morning the nominations for the 36th annual edition of the Independent Spirit Awards, which include five Latin American and U.S. Latinx nominees: Bacurau by Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles, The Mole Agent / El agente topo by Maite Alberdi, Landfall by Cecilia Aldarondo, La Leyenda Negra by Patricia Vidal Delgado and I Carry You With Me / Te llevo conmigo by Heidi Edwig.
Named one of the best films of the year, the acclaimed Brazilian production Bacurau starring Sônia Braga and Udo Kier has been nominated for Best International Feature. The Chilean film The Mole Agent, which is the country’s official submission to this year’s Academy Awards has nabbed a nomination for Best Documentary Film; while the documentary Landfall, on the aftermath of Hurricane María in Puerto Rico, was nominated for the Truer Than Fiction Award. The bilingual Latinx coming-of-age drama La Leyenda Negra was nominated for the John Cassavetes Award, presented to the creative team of a film budgeted at less than $500,000.
The Mexican-American co-production film I Carry You With Me starring Armando Espitia, Christian Vázquez, and Michelle Rodríguez, was nominated in two categories: for Best First Film, and for Best Editing. Additionally, Afro-Guatemalan actor Colman Domingo was nominated for Best Supporting Male for his performance as cutler in the drama Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and Mexican actor Harold Torres was nominated for Best Male Performance in a New Scripted Series for his role as sergeant Manuel Contreras in Amazon's narco-series ZeroZeroZero.
The winners of the 36th Film Independent Spirit Awards will be announced in a special ceremony on Thursday, April 22, 2021.
