BARDO and Chilean DP Claudio Miranda Nominated for the ASC Awards

The American Society of Cinematographers announced today the nominations for the 37th annual ASC Awards, which includes two Latin American contenders in the Theatrical Feature Film competition: the Mexican film Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths / Bardo: Falsa crónica de unas cuantas verdades, and the Chilean director of photography Claudio Miranda for his work on Top Gun: Maverick.

Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Bardo, which was recently shortlisted in the Best International Feature competition at the Oscars, was photographed by the Iranian-French DP Darius Khondji, who in addition to his nomination will be presented with the International Award at the ASC Awards. Born in Valparaíso, Miranda won the Oscar in 2013 for his work in Life of Pi, and has been nominated twice for the ASC Awards, in 2009 for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) and in 2013 for Life of Pi.

Three other Latin American cinematographers also nabbed ASC Award nominations in the television categories: Mexican DP Alejandro Martinez was nominated for Episode of a One-Hour Non-Commercial Television Series for his work on the HBO production House of the Dragon; while Costa Rican DP Christian “Tico” Herrera and Mexican cinematographer Jaime Reynoso, were nominated in the Episode of a One-Hour Commercial Television Series for FX’s Snowfall and TNT’s Snowpiercer, respectively.

Additionally, the series Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities nabbed two nominations in the Pilot, Limited Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television, for the episodes “The Outside,” photographed by Canadian DP Jeremy Benning; and “The Autopsy,” photographed by American Anastas Michos.

The winners of the 37th ASC Awards will be announced at a ceremony on Sunday, March 5, 2023.
