The Brazilian film Charcoal / Carvão, the debut feature by Carolina Markowicz, has been announced today as the only Latin American selection in a list of ten titles, competing for the Platform Prize at the 47th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Starring Maeve Jinkings (Aquarius, Neon Bull), and Argentine actor César Bordon (Wild Tales, The Headless Woman), the Brazilian-Argentine co-production will have its world premiere in the Canadian film festival running September 8-18.
Set in the Brazilian countryside, Charcoal tells the story of a family straining to care for their bedridden patriarch have their lives changed when a shady nurse offers a diabolical deal: put their elder to rest and host an Argentinian drug kingpin who urgently needs a place to hide.
Markowicz is a screenwriter and director based in São Paulo, Brazil. Her short films have won many international awards and have played in more than 200 festivals worldwide including Cannes' Directors’ Fortnight, TIFF, and SXSW.
Previous Latin American titles that have participated at TIFF’s Platform competition include the Argentine films The Sleepwalkers by Paula Hernández, Rojo by Benjamín Naishtat, and The Clan by Pablo Trapero; the Brazilian film Neon Bull by Gabriel Mascaro; and the Uruguayan film The Moneychanger by Federico Veiroj.
