The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) announced today that Brazilian filmmaker Carolina Markowicz will be honored with the TIFF Emerging Talent Award presented by MGM Studios given in the spirit of Torontonian Mary Pickford, the groundbreaking actor, producer, and co-founder of United Artists, whose impact continues today. Markowicz will be honored on Saturday, September 10 at the fifth annual TIFF Tribute Awards gala fundraiser at Fairmont Royal York Hotel, presented during the 2023 edition of the festival.
Markowicz has written and directed six award-winning short films that have been selected for more than 300 festivals, including Cannes, Locarno, SXSW, and AFI. Her 2018 short film, The Orphan, premiered in Cannes Directors’ Fortnight and won the Queer Palm. Since 2021, Carolina has been a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Her debut feature, Charcoal / Carvão, premiered at TIFF in 2022, and Toll, her second feature, will premiere at this year’s edition.
The 2023 edition of the Toronto International Film Festival will take place September 7-17.
