Cannes Adds New Films by Lisandro Alonso and Amat Escalante to the Official Selection

The Cannes Film Festival announced today the addition of two Latin American productions to the lineup of its upcoming 76th edition: Eureka by Argentine director Lisandro Alonso, and Lost in the Night / Perdidos en la noche by Mexican director Amat Escalante. Both films will screen in the Cannes Premiere section of the French film festival, an extension of the official selection for films that didn’t made it to the Palme d’Or competition due to space limitation.

Starring Viggo Mortensen, José María Yazpik, Chiara Mastroianni and Viilbjørk Malling Agger, Eureka follows Murphy as he searches for his daughter after she is kidnapped by the outlaw Randall. Alonso has had a long relationship with the French Festival since he premiered his debut feature La Libertad in the 2001 Un Certain Regard competition. All of his films have premiered at Cannes: Los Muertos (2004), Fantasma (2006) and Liverpool (2008), played at Directors’ Fortnight, and he won the Un Certain Regard competition in 2014 with Jauja, also starring Mortensen.

After wining the Best Director Award in 2013 for Heli, Escalante returns to La Croissette with Lost in the Night, which tells the story of Emiliano, who lives in a small mining town in Mexico. Motivated by a deep sense of justice, he searches for those responsible for the disappearance of his activist mother who was standing up for local jobs against an international mining company. Receiving no help from the police or judicial system, he finds a clue that leads him to the wealthy Aldama Family, where he meets a famous artist, his celebrity wife and their beautiful daughter.  It's not long before he has a job at their home and becomes determined to uncover the secrets beneath the surface.

The film is produced by Nicólas Célis, who produced Alfonso Cuarón’s Academy Award winner Roma, and stars Juan Daniel Garcia, Barbara Mori, Ester Exposito, Fernando Bonilla, and Maria Fernanda Osio.

The 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will take place May 16-27.
