The Cannes Film Festival unveiled this morning most of the lineup for its 76th annual edition, which as on years past, has very limited Latin American participation. Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz is the only Latin American filmmaker announced in the official Palme d’Or competition with his English-language debut Firebrand, a historical drama starring Michelle Williams as Katherine Parr, the sixth wife of King Henry The VIII.
Aïnouz is no stranger to Cannes, many of his films have screened in the French film festival dating back to his 2002 debut feature Madame Satã, which had its world premiere in the A Certain Regard competition. More recently, he became the third Latin American director to win the A Certain Regard Award for An Invisible Life / A Vida Invisível.
The A Certain Regard competition will feature the world premiere of three South American films: the Argentine film The Deliquents / Los delincuentes by Rodrigo Moreno; The Settlers / Los colonos, the debut feature by Chilean director Felipe Gálvez; and the Brazilian film Crowrã, The Buriti Flower by the directorial duo of João Salaviza & Renée Nader Messora.
Additionally, the documentary film Pictures of Ghosts / Retratos Fantasmas by Kleber Mendonca Filho, will have its world premiere in the French film festival as a special screening.
The 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will take place May 16-27, 2023.
