Mexican filmmaker Carlos Reygadas has been announced as a member of the main competition jury at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, set to take place from May 13 to May 24, 2025. Reygadas, known for his distinctive cinematic style and major contributions to Mexican cinema, will join a diverse panel of international artists tasked with awarding the prestigious Palme d'Or, among other honors.
The jury will be presided over by French actress Juliette Binoche. Together, they will evaluate the 21 films in competition and decide the festival's top prizes, including the Palme d'Or, Grand Prix, Jury Prize, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Actress. Joining Binoche and Reygadas are American actress and filmmaker Halle Berry, Indian director and screenwriter Payal Kapadia, Italian actress Alba Rohrwacher, French-Moroccan writer Leïla Slimani, Congolese director-producer Dieudo Hamadi, Korean director and screenwriter Hong Sangsoo, and American actor Jeremy Strong.
Carlos Reygadas is considered one of the most daring and influential voices in contemporary Mexican cinema. After working as a lawyer specializing in international law, he turned to filmmaking in the late 1990s. With his first film Japón (2002), he won the Caméra d’Or Special Distinction for his unique and demanding cinematography.
He entered the Competition at the Festival de Cannes 2005 with his second feature, Battle in heaven / Batalla en el cielo. He returned to the Festival de Cannes 2007 with Silent Light, winning the Jury Prize (ex-aequo). With Post Tenebras Lux, awarded for Best Director at the Festival de Cannes 2012, he confirms his mastery of his art.
In 2018, he directed Our Time, which had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. He is also a co-producer, notably of some films by Amat Escalante, Dea Kulumbegashvili, Christine Haroutounian, Hilal Baydarov. In 2023, he published Presencia, a book on cinema and the source of creation. Carlos Reygadas is currently working on his next film, Wake of Umbra.
The winners will be announced at the Closing Ceremony on Saturday, May 24, 2025.
