Chilean Short Film BESTIA Nabs an Oscar Nomination

The Chilean short film Bestia by Hugo Covarrubias and Tevo Díaz has just been announced as a nominee for Best Animated Short Film at the 94th annual edition of the Academy Awards. Bestia is looking to repeat the feat of Gabriel Osorio Vargas’ Bear Story / Historia de un oso, which became first Chilean winner of an Academy Award and the first Latin American animation to win and get nominated for an Oscar in 2016.

Inspired by real events, Bestia enters the life of a secret police agent in the military dictatorship in Chile. The relationship with her dog, her body, her fears and frustrations, reveal a macabre fracture in her mind and a country. The film has been playing at numerous international film festivals, and has received numerous awards.

The winners of the 94th Academy Awards will be announced on Sunday, March 27.
