Sag Harbor Cinema, the new state-of-the-art located in Eastern Long Island, continues its collaboration with Cinema Tropical, the leading presenter of Latin American films in the U.S., following the success of their recent joint program of the 20th anniversary screening of Alfonso Cuarón’s landmark film Y Tu Mamá También, during the Cinema’s grand opening weekend, last month.
Saluting Cinema Tropical’s 20th Anniversary, the series “A Celebration of Latin American Film,” running June 18-24, will include classics from masters of contemporary cinema. The five-film program will feature the Academy Award nominated Mexican film Amores Perros, the milestone film by Alejandro González Iñárritu in the 20th anniversary of its U.S. release; the breakthrough film by Argentine director Lucrecia Martel, La Ciénaga, also in its 20th anniversary, and the acclaimed film Aquarius by Kleber Mendonça Filho starring Sônia Braga.
The program is rounded up by two exciting preview runs, Ema by acclaimed director Pablo Larraín (Jackie, Neruda) and the Sundance favorite El Planeta, the debut feature by Argentine-Spanish director Amalia Ulman. The 7:30pm screening of El Planeta, on Friday, June 18th will be followed by a Q&A with the director, moderated by Sag Harbor Cinemas’s Artistic Director, Giulia D’Agnolo Vallan, and co-founding director of Cinema Tropical, Carlos A. Gutiérrez.
“Several of the best filmmakers working today come from Latin America. And Latin American cinema is many cinemas. Featuring works from Chile, Mexico, Brazil and Argentina, this program offers a glimpse of the variety of visions and themes springing from the area. It is an excitingly vibrant lineup,” says D’Agnolo Vallan.
