Cinema Tropical to Release the Brazilian Documentary MY DARLING SUPERMARKET in North America

New York–based Cinema Tropical has announced its acquisition of the North American rights to the Brazilian documentary film My Darling Supermarket / Meu Querido Supermercado, the debut feature by Tali Yankelevich. Cinema Tropical is set to release the film in virtual cinemas starting on Wednesday, February 24, 2021, including at New York City’s prestigious Film Forum, followed by other cities nationwide.

A production by Brazil’s Casa Redonda, in co-production with Denmark’s Good Company Pictures and Brazil’s Mão Direita, My Darling Supermarket had its world premiere in the IDFA Competition for First Appearance and has successfully played in numerous film festivals including MoMA’s Documentary Fortnight, Visions du Réel, Edinburgh, Thessaloniki, Guadalajara, and DOXA, among others.

A charming and witty portrait of a grocery store in São Paulo, My Darling Supermarket follows the day-to-day lives of its employees—a panoply of workers steeped in the confining space of the store. Humor, drama, mystery, romance—and even quantum physics—coexist alongside milk cartons, meat cuts, bar codes, and security cameras as these individuals try to subvert the mundane and cope with the drudgeries of low-wage labor.

The deal was negotiated by Carlos A. Gutiérrez of Cinema Tropical with Carolina Sganzerla of the São Paulo–based international sales agency Elo Company. “We are thrilled to announce Elo Company and Cinema Tropical's first deal. My Darling Supermarket is a very cinematic feat and follows a group of grocery workers, people who have recently become more resonant and relevant as supermarket workers are on the front lines of the coronavirus crisis. We are confident Cinema Tropical are the best partners to promote the film and reach its North American audiences,” says Sganzerla.
