The Loft Cinema, the University of Arizona’s Center for Latin American Studies, and Cinema Tropical are proud to announce the special film series “CineMÁS: Horror,” taking place on November 1 and 4 at The Loft Cinema in Tucson, Arizona; and programmed by Orquídea Morales.
The recent success of some Latin American horror films such as Jayro Bustamante’s La Llorona and Michelle Garza Cervera’s Huesera: The Bone Woman, have shed a light on the untapped and rich tradition of genre cinema in the region. The special series ‘CineMÁS: Horror’ celebrates Latin American horror cinema with three wonderful titles from Brazil, Chile, and Mexico, which masterfully weave terrifying genre conventions with local traditions, histories, and folklore to become larger national and political allegories.
The series kicks off on Wednesday, November 1 with the Mexican horror fairytale Tigers Are Not Afraid, the acclaimed film by director Issa López, which has been hailed by Stephen King as “terrific… tough and touching.” CineMÁS: Horror’ continues on Saturday, November 4 with the local premieres of The Wolf House / La casa lobo and Good Manners / As Boas Maneiras.
The Wolf House, the masterful debut feature by directors Joaquín Cociña and Cristóbal León, is an animated film unlike any other, an exquisitely handcrafted surrealist docu-horror-fairy tale about one of Chile’s darkest periods. Disney meets Jacques Tourneur in Juliana Rojas and Marco Dutra’s Good Manners. An unexpected and wild werewolf movie, the thrilling and dark gothic fable offers a poignant social and racial allegory on modern-day Brazilian society.
CineMÁS: Horror is the inaugural series of the larger initiative CineMÁS, presented by The Loft Cinema, the UA Center for Latin American Studies and Cinema Tropical to promote Latin American cinema in Tucson, and foster local audiences for its exhibition.
