CODA, Starring Mexican Actor Eugenio Derbez, Wins Oscar for Best Picture

CODA, the crowd-pleasing family drama by director Sian Heder and starring Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez, has won the Academy Award for Best Picture this evening at the 94th annual edition of the Academy Awards. In addition to the top award, the film also won in the other two categories for which it was nominated: for Best Supporting Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

CODA, which stands for child of deaf adult(s), tells the story of Ruby, who is the only hearing member of a deaf family from Gloucester, Massachusetts. At 17, she works mornings before school to help her parents and brother keep their fishing business afloat. But in joining her high school's choir club, Ruby finds herself drawn to both her duet partner and her latent passion for singing. Derbez plays the role of Bernardo Villalobos, the high school choir teacher who helps Ruby fulfill her artistic dream.

The Apple produced film made history tonight becoming the first film with a predominantly deaf cast to win the top Oscar, and it also marked the first time a streamer produced film to win this award.
