The Colombian documentary film Son of Sodom / Hijo de Sodoma by director Theo Montoya will be competing for the Palme d’Or in the short film competition at the 73rd edition of the Cannes Film Festival. The Colombian film is the only Latin American selection in the lineup of eleven films selected from a pool of 3,810 candidates from 137 countries.
The short film competition, which will take place at the Palais des Festival in Cannes in the fall, will be the only official competition that the French festival will hold this year after it cancelled its official competition and the parallel sections due to the pandemic. The dates and the jury will be announced at a later date.
Born in Medellín in 1992, Montoya is an audiovisual communication graduate of the University of Medellín. He is the founder and director of the production company Desvio Visual, focusing on queer, nihilistic and social stories. He’s currently working on the development of his directorial debut feature Anhell69, which has participated in the TorinoFilmLab, SANFIC in Chile, FIDBA and the Ventana Sur market in Argentina, and received the Tribeca All Access grant.
Montoya is looking to become the second Colombian director to win the Palme d’Or for Best Short film after Simón Mesa Soto won the coveted award for Leidi in 2014.
