Memoria, the Colombian film by Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul was awarded the Jury Prize at the 74th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, shared ex aequo with the Israeli film Ahed’s Knee by Nadav Lapid.

Boasting an international cast including British actor Tilda Swinton, Colombian actors Elkin Díaz and Juan Pablo Urrego, Mexican actor Daniel Giménez Cacho, and French actor Jeanne Balibar, the film follows Jessica, a Scottish woman as she unable to sleep ever since being startled by a loud ‘bang’ at daybreak, In Bogotá to visit her sister, she befriends Agnes, an archaeologist studying human remains discovered within a tunnel under construction. Jessica travels to see Agnes at the excavation site. In a small town nearby, she encounters a fish scaler, Hernan. They share memories by the river. As the day comes to a close, Jessica is awakened to a sense of clarity.

An international co-production between Colombia, Thailand, France, Germany, Mexico, and Qatar, the film had its world premiere at the French film festival this week where it was met to strong critical acclaim. The film has been acquired for U.S, release by distribution company Neon.
