Domingo and the Mist / Domingo y la niebla, the second feature by film by Costa Rican director Ariel Escalante Meza will have its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard competition at the 75th annual edition, it was announced this morning.
The film tells the story of Domingo, a 65-year-old man who lives in a town that is being threatened by thugs hired by a developer to expel its inhabitants and pave the way for the construction of a mega highway. But his land hides a secret—the ghost of his deceased wife who visits him within the mist. Domingo is sure he will never give up his land, even if that means resorting to violence.
The supernatural drama Domingo and the Mist participated as a work-in-progress both at Doha Film Institute’s Qumra, and at Panama International Film Festival’s Primera Mirada competition, where it received a special jury mention.
Escalante Meza graduated in Political Science from Universidad de Costa Rica and in Cinema from Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión (EICTV) in Cuba and Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. The Sound of Things / El sonido de las cosas, his debut film, won the Kommersant Weekend Prize at the Moscow Film Festival in 2016 and represented Costa Rica for the Academy Awards and Goya Awards in 2018. He also edited the film Ash Land / Ceniza negra by Sofía Quirós, which became the first Costa Rican film to participate at the Cannes Film Festival, having its world premiere at the Critics’ Week section.
The 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will take place May 17-28.
