Mexican director Guillermo del Toro was the winner of the Directors Guild of America (DGA)'s top feature award for his film The Shape of Water, placing him just one step away from wining the Oscar for Best Director. Only in seven times, out of the 69 editions of the DGA Awards, has the winner of the top prize failed to win the Academy Award in the directing category.

Last night's win for Del Toro marks the fourth time in the past five years that a Mexican director has won top honors at the DGA Awards after Alfonso Cuarón for Gravity in 2014, Alejandro González Iñárritu for Birdman in 2015, and for The Revenant in 2016.

In his acceptance speech at the Beverly Hilton Hotel Del Toro said that “inclusion is necessary if for no other reason than we’re not hearing all the stories that need to be heard.”
