KimStim has announced the digital and DV D release of the Chilean animated film The Wolf House / La casa lobo, acclaimed as one of the best movies of 2020 (so far) by numerous U.S. publications including IndieWire, Esquire, Slant Magazine, and Paste Magazine. The debut feature film by Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cociña premieres on VOD and DVD on Tuesday, October 13.
Combing stop-motion techniques, painting and photography, this exquisitely handcrafted animation feature tells the story of a girl who escapes a cult colony of religious fanatics during Chile’s darkest years under Pinochet. Maria, a girl finds refuge in a house in the south of Chile after escaping from a sect of German religious fanatics. She is welcomed into the home by two pigs, the only inhabitants of the place. Like in a dream, the universe of the house reacts to Maria’s feelings. The animals transform slowly into humans and the house becomes a nightmarish world. Inspired on the actual case of Colonia Dignidad, The Wolf House masquerades as an animated fairy tale produced by the leader of the sect in order to indoctrinate its followers.
The film will be available on iTunes, Amazon Prime, Google Play, Microsoft Xbox, VUDU, Vubiquity, InDemand (Movies), DirecTV (TVOD), FandangoNOW, and AT&T U-verse. The DVD edition will also include some special features including the short films Weathervene by Joaquín Cociña, Der Kleinere Raum / The Smaller Room by Cristóbal León and Nina Wehrle, deleted scenes, video Interviews with the filmmakers, plus a special collectors booklet with the directors' statement, the essay: The Bitterness of Honey by Jack Zipes, and a selection of original artwork by the Chilean filmmakers.
The Chilean film, winner of the Cinema Tropical Award for Best First Film, had a successful virtual theatrical release last June earning raving reviews, including a New York Times Critic’s Pick. Reviewing for the newspaper, film critic Glenn Kenny described the film as “astounding… The film surprises, with incredible force!”
