LÓPEZ STREET / CALLE LÓPEZ
A film by Lisa Tillinger and Gerardo Barroso Alcalá
(Mexico, 2013, 80 min. In Spanish with English subtitles)
In Mexico City’s historic center, López Street presents an endless series of vivid tableaux that would enchant anyone with a camera; it is all too easy to see the place with a tourist’s charmed but uncritical gaze. Gerardo Barroso and Lisa Tillinger live there and have built strong relationships with fellow residents. They were able to capture an entire day in the life of the street, from sunrise to sunset, with its daily cycles of work and complex social interactions. Using rich, perceptive black and white that testifies to their pedigree as cinematographers, they observe but do not participate in the activities of the myriad small-scale street workers who spontaneously create living theatre with real human and sociological depth.
