Filmmakers Rodrigo Moreno and Petra Costa Take Seat on Berlinale Jury

Two Latin American filmmakers have been announced among the jury members for the 75th edition of the Berlin Film Festival: Argentine director Rodrigo Moreno will serve in the International Jury for the Golden and Silver Bear competition, and the Brazilian director Petra Costa will participate in the Documentary Award jury.

Moreno is one of the key figures in new Argentine cinema. His award-winning and critically acclaimed film The Delinquents, which celebrated its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard series at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023, also screened at the film festivals in Toronto, San Sebastián, New York, London, Chicago and Busan, among others, and landed in the annual top ten of The Guardian, Cahiers du cinéma and Le Monde.

Moreno’s debut film El Custodio, a funding project of the World Cinema Fund, received a prize at Sundance, then screened successfully in the Berlinale Competition in 2006, winning one of the major awards for innovative filmmaking. Five years later, he returned to the Berlinale Competition with A Mysterious World. He also directed and produced Reimon (2014) and the documentary Provincial City (2017). Moreno teaches Directing at the Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires and has been a member of the board of the renowned annual magazine Revista de Cine since 2012, where he also publishes texts on cinema.

Costa has been telling stories at the intersection of the personal and the political, for more than a decade, often with a focus on her native Brazil. Her most recent documentary film Apocalypse in the Tropics celebrated its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in 2024. Previously, The Edge of Democracy (2019) earned her an Oscar nomination as well as the Peabody and the Independent Spirit Award. Costa's first film Elena became the most-watched documentary in Brazil after a world premiere at IDFA 2013 and was honoured at various festivals. She also co-directed the film Olmo & the Seagull (2015) with Lea Glob and was involved as a producer in films such as Ecstasy (2020) and Beba (2021).

The 75th edition of the Berlinale runs February 13-23, 2025.
