Four Latin American non-fiction films, by Brazilian, Colombian, and Mexican directors, have been selected for the 2021 edition of the True/False Film Festival, taking place May 5-9 with a hybrid format combining outdoor and drive-in screenings in Columbia, Missouri, with virtual screenings.
The four Latin American titles are Dirty Feathers, the poetic debut feature by Carlos Alfonso Corral documenting how members of El Paso’s unhoused community band together to survive the streets with humor, grit, and grace; No Kings, the sensuous feature debut from Emilia Mello that shares an intimate look at the vibrant Caiçara community along the secluded Brazilian coast, told through the eyes of an intrepid young girl and an anxious sea captain; Songs that Flood the River by German Adolfo Arango set deep within the Colombian rainforest, where Oneida sings traditional funeral songs (alabados) as a healing tool for her community, stricken by war and terror during the Bojayá massacre that took place in 2002; and Users by Mexican-American director Natalia Almada, in which elegant visuals and a dynamic score underpin this exploration of our relationship with technology, all informed by a mother’s perspective.
Additionally, True/False will also feature two South American short films: The Flooded House by Lucía Malandro, in which decaying footage of a past life in Uruguay helps piece together family trauma; and the Argentine short Homage to the Work of Philip Henry Gosse by Pablo Weber, depicting our historical fascination with artifacts spirals into some truly unexpected locales.
