The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences presented this past Friday, January  28 a special conversation on Latin American cinema, moderated by renowned Spanish producer Rosa Bosch (who has worked extensively with Mexican directors Guillermo del Toro and Alejandro González Iñárritu) and with an introduction by Mexican actor Diego Luna.

Titled “From Latin America into the Mainstream,” the panel was composed of four celebrated Latin American filmmakers including Mexican director Gerardo Naranjo (Miss Bala); Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz (Invisible Life); Chilean writer-director Marcela Said (Los perros); and Guatemalan writer-director Jayro Bustamante (La Llorona).

After a brief introduction by Luna, the group entered into an important discussion on the state of Latin American cinema today, the challenges and setbacks they faced in their respective careers, the politics that drive their filmmaking practices, and the visibility they’re now celebrating as Latin American directors on the international stage.
