Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio was the winner of the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, marking the third Oscar win for the Mexican director after winning the coveted statuette for Best Director and Best Picture for The Shape of the Water in 2018.
In his acceptance speech, del Toro said that “animation is cinema, is not a genre,” and dedicated the award to his wife, Kim Morgan, his kids, and to his late parents.

Co-directed by Mark Gustafson, in Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, the Mexican filmmaker reinvents the classic story of the wooden puppet who was brought to life in a stunning stop-motion musical tale. Set in Mussolini’s Italy, a father's wish magically brings a wooden boy to life in Italy, giving him a chance to care for the child. However, the two of them have to struggle to find a place for themselves as the country becomes embroiled in fascism.
The winners of the 95th edition of the Academy Awards were announced this evening at a ceremony in Hollywood, California.
