Guillermo del Toro's PINOCCHIO Wins BAFTA Award for Best Animated Feature

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio directed by the Mexican filmmaker with Mark Gustafson was the winner of the British Academy Film Award (BAFTA) for Best Animated Feature. The film was also nominated for Best Production Score and Best Score, which it lost to All Quiet on the Western Front and Babylon, respectively.

The Academy Award-winning director del Toro and award winning, stop-motion legend Mark Gustafson reimagine the classic Carlo Collodi tale of the fabled wooden boy with a whimsical tour de force that finds Pinocchio on an enchanted adventure that transcends worlds and reveals the life-giving power of love.

In his acceptance speech, del Toro thanked Netflix “for thinking that a musical of Pinocchio, about life and death, where everybody dies at the end, during the rise of Mussolini, was a good idea.” Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio has also won the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature, and it’s considered the frontrunner in the Oscar competition for the same category.

This marked del Toro’s sixth BAFTA win, after he won the statuettes for Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Not in the English Language for Pan’s Labyrinth in 2007, and for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay for The Shape of Water in 2018.

The winners of the 76th annual British Academy Film Awards were announced today at a ceremony at the Southbank Centre, in London, England.
