The supernatural horror movie When Evil Lurks / Cuando acecha la maldad was presented with the top award for Best Feature Film at the 19th annual Sur Awards, hosted by the Argentine Academy of Cinematography Arts and Sciences last week. The film’s director, Demian Rugna, also won the Best Director award, and the film received the award for Best Costume Design. When Evil Lurks centers on two brothers who must act quickly to stop the emergence of pure evil as a wave of demonic possessions sweeps through their rural community.
Blondi, directed by and starring Dolores Fonzi, received the most awards, taking home four: Best First Film, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Male Breakthrough Performance. Led by Fonzi herself, Blondi explores the close relationship between a mother who still behaves like a teenager and her mature son, who is trying to find his way in life.
Other winning films include the comedy Puan by María Alché and Benjamín Naishtat, which won awards for Best Actor, presented to Marcelo Subiotto, and Best Supporting Actor, awarded to Leonardo Sbaraglia. The film also won the award for Best Music. Rodrigo Moreno’s existentialist heist movie The Delinquents / Los delincuentes won awards for Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Female Breakthrough Performance.
Daniela Goggi’s historical drama The Rescue / El rapto won awards for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Art Direction, and Best Sound, while The Trial / El juicio won awards for Best Documentary and Best Editing.
