Karnawal, the debut feature by Juan Pablo Félix, was the top winner at the 2022 edition of the Sur Awards presented by the Argentine Academy of Cinematography Arts and Sciences. The co-production between Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and Norway, took home eight statuettes out of 14 nominations, including for Best Picture, Best Director, Best First Film, and Best Screenplay.
Set near the border between Argentina and Bolivia during carvanal, Karnawal tells the story of a young Malambo dancer who prepares for the most important competition of his life. When his ex-convict father returns, he jeopardizes everything by dragging his son into his criminal world. The cast includes Chilean actor Alfredo Castro (The Club, No), who was presented with the Sur Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Natalia Meta’s Berlinale thriller The Intruder / El prófugo that was nominated for 11 awards won in seven categories including for Best Actress for her protagonist Érica Rivas, for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Cinematography. The Sur Award for Best Documentary was presented to Chango, la luz descubre by Alejandra Martín and Paola Rizzi. Additionally, veteran actress Graciela Borges (La ciénaga, The Weasel’s Tale) was presented with a special lifetime award.
