The Dominican Republic announced today the selection of José María Cabral's Carpinteros, as its Oscar candidate, becoming the first Latin American nation to select its representative for the foreign-language category for the 90th edition of the Academy Awards.

Carpinteros, which had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this January and will open in U.S. theaters this September, follows a young man who finds love in a Dominican Republic prison in this fresh and indelible film burgeoning with atmosphere, sexuality and grit. The film was also announced as the country's candidate to Spain's Goya Awards.

This is the second film by Cabral selected to represent the Caribbean island at the Oscars after ¡Jaque Mate! in 2013. The Dominican Republic has never earned an Academy Award nomination.
