Latin American Talent and Films Nominated for the BAFTA Awards

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced today the nominees for its 76th annual BAFTA Awards, which includes five Latin American nominees from Argentina, Cuba, Chile, and Mexico.

Santiago Mitre’s courtroom drama Argentina, 1985 was nominated for Best Film Not in the English Language. The Argentine film, which recently won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Non-English, will be competing against the favorite, All Quiet on the Western Front. the German production that nabbed 14 BAFTA nominations—tied with 2001's Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon as the foreign-language film with the most nominations in the history of the BAFTAs.

In the acting categories, Cuban actress Ana de Armas was nominated for Leading Actress for her role as Marilyn Monroe in the biopic movie Blonde by Andrew Dominik. Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, directed by the Mexican filmmaker with Mark Gustafson nabbed three nominations for Best Animated Feature, Best Original Score, and Best Production Design.

Additionally, The Wonder directed by Chilean filmmaker Sebastián Lelio and starring Florence Pugh was nominated for Outstanding British Film; while Chilean director of photography Claudio Miranda was nominated for Best Cinematography for his work in Top Gun: Maverick.

The winners of the BAFTA Film Awards 2023 will be announced in a ceremony in London on February 19.
