Latinx actors Ana de Armas and Anthony Ramos have been selected in this year’s Time100 Next, the magazine’s annual list that highlights one hundred individuals who are shaping the future of their fields and defining the next generation of leadership in business, entertainment, health and science, sports, activism, and more.
Cuban-born actress Ana de Armas began active in her native country, most notably in the leading role of the 2006 film Una rosa de Francia by Spanish director Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón. At the age of 18, she moved to Madrid, Spain, where she starred in the six seasons of the popular drama thriller series El Internado. After relocating to Los Angeles to pursue a career in Hollywood, she’s acted in the erotic thriller Knock Knock, the comedy-crime film War Dogs, the biopic Hands of Stone.
Her English-language breakthrough performance was in Blade Runner 2049, followed by Knives Out, for which she received a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical. In the profile of the Cuban performer, American actress Jamie Lee Curtis—who had worked with her on Knives Out—wrote: “A megaestrella has arrived: Que seas tú la estrella que brilla alto y fuerte, Ana de Armas.”
Born in 1991, actor, singer and songwriter Anthony Ramos of Puerto Rican descent was raised in Bushwick, New York. He studied at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, a conservatory for the performing arts, and graduated from its musical theatre program in 2011. His breakthrough performance was in the Tony and Grammy award-winning Broadway smash Hamilton. Ramos was cast in director Spike Lee's Netflix comedy-drama series She's Gotta Have It, in the role of Mars Blackmon.
He also played the role of Ramon in the 2018 remake of A Star Is Born, starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, and directed by Cooper. He plays the role of Usnavi in the upcoming film adaptation of the Broadway musical In the Heights, set to premiere this year.
