Latinx actors Rachel Zegler and Ariana DeBose were announced among the winners of the 79th annual edition of the Golden Globes for their performance in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story. Colombian-American Zegler was the winner of the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy for her role of Maria; while DeBose, of Afro-Puerto Rican descend, was the winner for Best Supporting Actress, Motion Picture for her role of Anita.
Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story, a musical set in the mid-fifties in which a modern day Romeo and Juliet are involved in New York street gangs, was also announced winner of the award for Best Picture, Musical or Comedy. The Golden Globes winners were announced at a private ceremony and shared on social media.
Additionally, Disney’s Colombia inspired film Encanto was awarded as Best Motion Picture, Animated; and Latinx actor and singer Michaela Jaé Rodriguez made history becoming the first trans actress to win a Golden Globe, for her performance in the television series Posé.
