Launching of Corrientes, a New Site Dedicated to Latin American Experimental Work

Corrientes, a new online platform for Latin American experimental cinema has launched this week with the aim of increasing visibility and connecting artists and viewers. The site helmed by Mariana Sánchez Bueno will showcase the work of a different artist every two week. Each film will be accompanied by a creative piece, commissioned to provide critical thought and encourage conversation with and around the work.

This first edition of Corrientes features Switzerland-based Chilean artist Jeannette Muñoz and her ongoing project, Envíos. Literally translated from Spanish as ‘sendings,’ Envíos consist of a series of filmic letters that the artist dedicates to family and friends.

Envío 24, shot on camera with double exposure; a tourist postcard of three Selk’nam women over the city of London, which recreates the route that people brought illegally from Tierra del Fuego as part of a “human zoo” would have taken then. Envío 26, filmed in the town of "El Volcán"(The Volcano) in the pre-mountain range of the Chilean Andes which records a day of work with two artist friends; and Envío 34, filmed in Italy, which follows a festive pilgrimage path in the Ligurian Alps.

Everything Muñoz depicts holds power, perhaps in its silence and mystery. In response to Muñoz’s practice, filmmaker Daniela Delgado Viteri has offered a letter back to Muñoz,  reflecting on the mysteries and secrets that have found their way into Munoz’ camera and back out into the world through her lens.

Muñoz is an independent filmmaker/artist, that makes 16mm films since 2001 that circulate primarily in an experimental and non-fiction film context. Her films have been exhibited in many festivals and venues including the New York Film Festival,  Rotterdam FF Spektrum, Images Film Festival Toronto, Media City Film Festival Ontario Canada, Arsenal-Berlin, Ourense Film Festival, Festival Punto de Vista Pamplona, CGAI Centro Gallego de Artes da Imaxe, Xcèntric CCCB Barcelona, Palais de Glace Buenos Aires, Festival Internacional de Valdivia, Videoex Zürich, and many others.
