New York-based distribution company Film Movement has announced the U.S. virtual theatrical release of the Peruvian film Song Without a Name / Canción sin nombre, the debut feature by Melina León, which had its world premiere at the 2019 edition of Cannes Directors’ Fortnight and has been awarded numerous prizes in several international film festivals.
Based on true events, Song Without a Name narrates the story of Georgina, an indigenous Andean woman whose newborn baby is whisked away moments after its birth in a downtown Lima clinic — and never returned. Stonewalled by a byzantine and indifferent legal system, Georgina approaches journalist Pedro Campas, who uncovers a web of fake clinics and abductions — pointing to a rotting corruption deep within Peruvian society.
Set in 1988 in a Peru wracked by political violence and turmoil, León’s heart-wrenching first feature is shot in gorgeous, shadowy black-and-white cinematography and stars Pamela Mendoza, Tommy Párraga, and Lucio Rojas. Hailed as a "Kafkaesque thriller" (The Hollywood Reporter) and "styled like the most beautiful of bad dreams" (Variety), Song Without a Name unflinchingly depicts real-life, stranger-than fiction tragedies with poetic beauty.
The film opens on Friday, August 7 in U.S. virtual cinemas across the country.
