Three-time Academy Award Mexican nominee Rodrigo Prieto is the cinematographer behind the much-lauded Barbie movie, directed by Greta Gerwig, which opened to great success in U.S. and international cinemas this weekend.
Prieto had worked with Barbie’s star Margot Robbie in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street ten years ago. Since then, the Hollywood actress was captivated by his work and suggested him to director Greta Gerwig for Barbie. “I immediately thought of him for this movie. I told Greta 'please, let's bring Rodrigo' and fortunately she had that in mind for a long time. He was so perfect, but speaking of the color pink, that is probably the pain of his existence, because he had to balance pink with the other colors in the film,” said the actress in an interview.
Prieto was born in 1965 in Mexico City, where he studied at the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica (CCC), and moved to the United States in 2000. He has worked with Alejandro González Iñárritu on Amores Perros (2000), 21 Grams (2003), Babel (2006), and Biutiful (2010). He has been nominated three times for an Oscar for Brokeback Mountain (2006), Silence (2017), and The Irishman (2020). Prieto is making his directorial debut with the Mexican novel film adaptation Pedro Páramo by Juan Rulfo, currently in post-production.
