Mexican Cinema Breaks All-Time Production Record with 259 Titles in 2021

Prayers for the Stolen by Tatiana Huezo

Mexico produced 259 films in 2021, breaking an all-time record, reported the Mexican Film Institute (IMCINE) in its statistical yearbook of Mexican Cinema 2021, which was presented a few days ago. After a significant decrease in 2020 due to the pandemic, with only 111 titles produced, Mexican cinema bounced back last year, in historic fashion, beating the previous record of 216 in 2019. Not even during the so-called Golden Era of Mexican cinema of the forties and fifties did the country's output achieve such a level.

Of the 259 Mexican films produced last year, 66 were made by female directors, 56% were supported with state funding, 116 were debut films, and 97 were documentary features. Mexican cinema produced 842 short films in 2021. The most viewed film of 2021 was the comedy hit The Waiter / El mesero by Raúl Martínez starring Vadhir Derbez and Bárbara López, while the most awarded Mexican film was Tatiana Huezo’s Prayers for the Stolen / Noche de fuego, which was the country’s Oscar submission for Best International Feature and won eight international awards.

Additionally, 52 feature films were made in coproduction with 31 countries, led by the United States, with 18, followed by Spain, Argentina and France. The report also noted that 70 Mexican films were released by local screens and were seen by 4.9 million spectators.
