The Mexican film Los Lobos by Samuel Kishi Leopo has been announced as the winner of the Special Jury Award at the virtual 34th edition of the Fribourg Film Festival . The award which comes with cash prize money of CHF 10,000 (approximately 10411 USD), is presented to an understated yet powerful tribute to people living on the margins.

Los Lobos tells the story of two children and their mother, who are living as undocumented immigrants in the US. Locked in a shabby room, the brothers escape the tedium by inventing stories and listening to tapes their mum has made for them.

According to the President of the Jury, the French actress Elodie Bordas, “This is a film that charmed and moved us for its simplicity and quiet strength. Los Lobos allows us to see hope through the bleakness.” Kishi Leopo’s second feature film had been awarded with the Grand Prix of the International Jury in the Generation Kplus competition for Best Film at the last edition the Berlinale.

Additionally, the Fribourg jury also gave a Special Mention to Lina from Lima, by Chilean director María Paz González, a flamboyant musical comedy with a social message.

The 34th edition of the Fribourg International Film Festival in Switzerland was scheduled to be held between March 20-28, but was cancelled due to the global pandemic. In place of public screenings, the films were reviewed and judged online by the jurors.
